Q. What is a pre-move survey?

A. A pre-move survey is a "visual" inspection of everything you intend to move performed by a representative from the moving company at your residence. This is done in order to estimate the weight of your shipment and to determine the type and amount of packing material needed. The survey provides the opportunity and is the best time to communicate any special requirements you might have.

Q. What if the moving company does not send a representative?

A. If the moving company refuses to conduct an on-site survey, contact your Move Manager directly.

Q. Is there a weight limit on my shipment which the government will pay?

A. Yes, there is a weight limit. Your Move Manager will go over the specifics with you.

Q. What type of household goods am I allowed to ship?

A. You may ship all personal property that belongs to you and your immediate family, including items such as motorcycles, outdoor structures (that are already disassembled), snowmobiles and waterbeds (if drained and refilled by you or a third-party vendor).

Q. What articles will the moving company not transport?

A. Moving companies will not transport hazardous materials such as explosives or flammables, perishable goods, including refrigerated and frozen foods, live house plants, poisons, fuels and other combustibles.

Q. Should I let the packers pack my family heirlooms?

A. It is not recommended that jewelry, family heirlooms, money, bank books and personal mementos with sentimental value be placed in your household goods shipment. It is suggested that you carry these items with you.

Q. What are accessorial services?

A. Accessorial services are services that are not part of the regular line-haul services necessary to complete the move, such as crating, appliance servicing and unpacking.

Q. Can I have my household goods placed in temporary storage?

A. If authorized by your agency, your household goods may be placed in temporary storage for up to 90 days. If additional time is needed, you will need authorization from your agency and will be asked to put your request in writing.

Q. During what hours will my household goods be packed, loaded and delivered?

A. Your carrier should pick up and deliver your goods between the normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The carrier may perform these services at hours other than 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. provided that this is satisfactory to you and the carrier agrees to do so at no additional costs to the government.

Q. What should I do if the moving company doesn't show up on our agreed-upon dates?

A. If the moving company fails to show up at the agreed-upon time or date you should contact your Move Manager or Agency Move Coordinator as soon as possible.

Q. What if I have a problem with the moving company's personnel?

A. If you cannot resolve the issue with the moving company's on-site representative, you should immediately contact your Interstate Move Manager or Agency Move Coordinator and advise them of the situation. If the situation is unlawful in nature, contact the local authorities.

Q. What items will the moving company dissassemble or reassemble?

A. Items such as your refrigerator icemaker, outside sheds, swing sets and pool tables must be disassembled by you, or you must make arrangements for these items to be disassembled by a third-party service company. Be certain to check with your Agency Move Coordinator, as these costs may be reimbursed to you as a miscellaneous expense.

Q. What do servicing and un-servicing mean?

A. Servicing and un-servicing mean preparing articles that have free moving parts, mechanisms, attachments or accessories that, if not properly serviced, would be damaged or rendered inoperative during transit.

Q. Can I move my pets or plants on the moving van?

A. Pets cannot be carried on a moving van. In most cases plants can be taken, however we cannot be held responsible for their condition upon arrival at destination.

Q. What is an inventory?

A. An inventory is the document that itemizes your household goods possessions and their condition when packed and loaded on the moving van.

Q. Who unloads and unpacks my household goods?

A. The moving company will deliver and unload your shipment and will perform a partial unpack at destination. If you would like a full unpack, you must request it in advance.
